Globe Host Real Street Comp at Varsity

On Saturday the 3rd of March, Globe shoes, in conjunction with Thrasher magazine and the Gold Coast City Council held a weekend full of skateboarding events, including a bowl jam at Pizzey Park, a mini ramp jam at the Globe shop in Mermaid and the big finale--- a best trick comp down the infamous Varsity double set of stairs.

A monster stack of steps with a flat in the middle! Gnarly! Put it this way, Globe invited 60 of the top pro skaters across the world (expences paid), only 35 accepted the invite to come have a go, on the day though only 12 skateboarders manned up to conquer the beast. Did I fail to mention the $35,000US first prize. The format of the comp was open-- the clock started and the skaters had 2 hours to try tricks, occasionally having to wait for traffic before attempting a trick. Just another hurdle when you’re competing on a real street obstacle.

Pro skaters that cash In were Sierra Fellers, Stefan Janoski, Terrell Robinson, Paul Rodriguez , Chima Ferguson (aussie) and Greg Lutzka. In the end the trick to win was a switch backside heelflip performed by Adam Dyet. Afterwards he placed his winnings on a bar tab at the Hard Rock cafe for fellow skaters and friends. As you can imagine $35 grand goes a long way, everyone partied into the wee hours of the nite and Adam got plenty of change.

Globe will be looking into more events like this in the future, who knows maybe they will invite a bunch of pros to come jump off your roof next year!
