Beachside Skate Comp '08

Send to friendPDF version

Beachside Skate Comp began in 2006 out of a need within our local youth group who were keen skateboard riders.

No one on the Tweed or Gold Coast were holding skate comps. We wanted to support the desire of these youths to compete and increase their skill levels whilst at the same time channel their energy and focus into their sport rather than anti-social behaviour. With the support of some fabulous local businesses and Sid Tapia (x-pro skater from Sydney).

Sid Tapia was with us again and David Reasbeck (christian pro skater from California). David travels the world starting Skate Churches in Scotland, Romania, Germany, Africa etc. David visited all our local high schools throughout the week leading up to the Skate Comp. He hung out at the local skate parks skating and talking with the skaters about life choices.

We had about 450 in attendance, with 80 competitors. Apart from the awesome prizes of new skateboards and vouchers, we gave out about 50 pair of DVS Shoes amongst numerous T-shirts, caps, DVD’s and stickers generously donated from local businessess such as Premium Skateboards, Concrete Lines (Tweed Heads), Pharside Skate (Murwillumbah), Home (Pottsville), Cabarita Surf, Kingscliff Surf and Solution Surf (Murwillumbah) and Southern Cross Credit Union. The support from the Tweed Shire Council, the Daily News and local businessess is amazing. They really care about this sport and in particular the youth of the Tweed.

Open was won by Nathan Oram & Jakob Robinson who is only 10yrs old second.

U 18’s was won by Nathan Dodd

U16’s by Bugs Fardell

U 14’s by Jett O’Toole

U 12’s by Martin Monagham

Girls by Jacquiline Rogers

Judges for the day were Sid Tapia (christian pro skater Sydney), David Reasbeck (christian pro skater California), Tony Lawerence (Pharside Skate Murwillumbah), Gus Buckner (Home Pottsville) and Les Graue (Concrete Lines Tweed).

A brilliant day was had by all and I have been told it was the best yet. David Reasbeck who came from California for the comp stated “he travels the world and has not seen so much effort put into any comp.- the standard was second to none.

The Comp was visited by rep’s from Globe, DVS and Kew Day checking it out.

I believe this Comp is lifting the profile of Skateboarding in the Tweed Coast and making the public aware of the popularity of skate boarding as a serious sport.
